Welcome to the College of Social and Applied Human Sciences (CSAHS), which traces its origins and traditions to the establishment of the Macdonald Institute, one of the University of Guelph's three founding colleges. CSAHS has more than 4,000 undergraduate students, 300 graduate students and 200 faculty and staff. The college provides programming in a range of social science and applied human science disciplines and support to discipline-based and inter/multi-disciplinary researchers. The overarching goal of the college is to serve society through the provision of world-class education supported by innovative programs of research and outreach. We believe that the best education in the 21st century is one that combines academic study and real life experience. Our goal is to instill in students the knowledge, skills, awareness and critical sense of engagement with society that will enable them to reach their full potential to make a difference wherever they go in the world. The strength of the college lies in the capacity and achievement of its people, ample evidence of which can be found in past issues of the CSAHS Insight(formerly the CSAHS Bulletin) and elsewhere in this website. In Research, you will learn of the tremendous growth in activity that has occurred in recent years and of the impact of the college's researchers in their chosen fields and in society generally. In Advancement, you will learn about the rich heritage built by 11 decades of alumni and of the many ways in which our graduates support the life and objectives of the college and the university. The college is comprised of five departments: Family Relations and Applied Nutrition (FRAN), Geography, Political Science, Psychology, and Sociology and Anthropology. These departments offer a range of academic programs at the undergraduate and graduate level, several of which are professionally accredited. The college is also home to two large inter-disciplinary programs – International Development Studies and Criminal Justice and Public Policy – that draw on expertise housed in several academic units. The college is committed to conducting research that is socially responsive, engaged with the community and effective in shaping public policy. It has two very unique structures that facilitate this work including The Centre for Families, Work and Wellbeing (CFWW) and the Institute on Community Engaged Scholarship (ICES)(including the Research Shop). These are active sites of collaboration among faculty, students and community partners and exemplify the college's commitment to community engaged scholarship, knowledge mobilization and social transformation. As we put teaching and research into practice, CSAHS strives above all else to improve the everyday quality of life for individuals and families – at home, in the workplace and in communities near and far.
